Reader's note: this article is best read while listening to an old school version of Louis Armstrong singing "What a Wonderful World" (we can't promise you won't want to start kissing babies and frolicking in a field afterwards though...)

We live in a very unique world. Next time you step outside at night, look up to the stars – you’re actually looking into the solar system, and out of all the planets in the solar system, Earth is the only one that can sustain life. It’s been carefully placed so that we could survive; if we were any closer to the sun we would burn up and if we were any further we would freeze. We also have an atmosphere above our heads that protects us from harmful radiation and things falling from outer space. In that atmosphere, there is the right mixture of nitrogen and oxygen so that we can breathe and things don’t suddenly burn up. Our planet is also made up of over 70% water; water that is essential for life.

From all these extraordinary factors, we have the beautiful blue and green Earth, and no two places are the same. There are places in South America where rainforests are so vast that it looks like a sea of green. You can go to Africa and the deserts fill the horizon. Or you can take a hike into the Himalayas and scale the tallest mountains. And in each different landscape, there are unique plants and animals that have adapted to that geography and climate, and amongst all that there’s us.

Humans play such a big part in the natural world today, that our actions may determine the very existence of any other species. And just like us, this is the only world they have. Trees give us the air we breathe; the rivers and rain give us the water we drink, and the ground beneath us gives us the soil to grow food. But if we cut down all the trees, the air becomes dirty. If we keep putting chemicals into the water, we have nothing left to drink. And if we poison the ground, we can’t grow our food. But it’s also their air, their water and their soil.

We’ve got a beautiful planet and since it’s the only one made for us, we need to do what we can to protect it.

Peace out,
